The title is a little bit ironic, because the previous post was about Mac Messenger being NOT dead. Well, my problem is I make lots of promises (especially to myself) to do things in the future. I simple don’t have the time, resources or willingness to continue this project. I recommend using Adium or some other Mac messaging clients if you have Mac OS X. This site will, however, be forever (if it is possible) online and Mac Messenger will always be available for download. It still works on older Macs running Mac OS 9 or even 8.6, but when our good friends from Windows Live decide to abandon the old MSNP8 protocol, it’s over and Mac Messenger will be dead. But I think that by that time everyone will have an OS X-capable Mac. I mean, I recently bought a Blue/White G3 for just 25 euro’s! And Mac OS X isn’t *that* expensive after all.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all the people who made Mac Messenger a success, the people who have tested it, the people who commented on it on the forums, and last but not least the Mac Messenger users! It was a truly unique experience which was non-existent without you all! Thank you.
Long time no see. Due to several events (including personal), development of Mac Messenger (and Mac Messenger Daemon) has been put on hold for a little time. I (Echelon) am still working on the Mac Messenger Daemon and I recently got a new classic Mac (Performa 5260) to develop and test the Daemon. Other experienced AE programmers are always welcome to share their toughts about the infrastructure and implementation of the system. There is also a “lite” version of Mac Messenger on the way, which is aimed at people with slow old PPC Macs (like my “new” Performa 5260
). Also, because I am studying informatics at a university (see my website) I got a course called “algorithms and datastructures”. While attending the classes, I realised that Mac Messenger has some very inefficient parts which make it very slow (especially when loading a huge contact list). So you can expect an “optimized” and “smarter” soon. Mac Messenger is not dead!
Thank you to all the people who are still using it. You all give me mood and courage to develop this handy legacy tool. Other parts of this website will be updated soon.
The development of Mac Messenger Daemon has been started. If you don’t know what it is yet, I’ll tell you now:
It’s a background application that manages multiple MSN connections and can be used with AppleEvents. (AE)
This allows the development of a Mac Messenger that even runs on the old Mac Plus!
Stay tuned for more news!
As you might have noticed, the site has been moved!
From now on the site is hosted on http://macmessenger.channelwood.org
please update your bookmarks
or use www.sparktech.tk
I know you all have been waiting very long, I’m very sorry for the delay, but here are they, the NEW Echelon Forums (aka Mac Messenger forums)!
As you might have noticed, the Echelon forums has been broken for quite a while, and is now even down completely…
I’ll (”Marius_Th”) be trying to talk to Jef “Echelon” Geskens as soon as possible and see if we can put up a new forum.
In the mean time you can all post comments on this site/post if you’re having troubles, or want to suggest something with Mac Messenger
(Edit: View Echelon’s Website for more information)
